HZ Studio Architecture & Engineering is born in 2006 in Cagliari from partnership beetween two different professionals, sharing same goals, Christian Bonu and Ivan Zucca.
Strong starting idea has been the creation of a multidisciplinary platform at international level, where, through an architectural and engeneering integrated approach, create architecture communicating the power of our time.
Structure’s philosophy is, in fact, the continuous research of state-of-the-art innovative solutions and strong partnership in constructive and management activities of building site.
Architectural, environmental, energetic and constructive quality of projects is analysed and developed using specific software, which come from founders specialisation at international level, in order to design buildings, where design and realisation stages are an integrated process.
Strenghts are represented by a state-of-the-art contemporary design and a sperimental research of construction and technology.
The design of sustainable architectures, the cutting-edge constructive approach, the strong reseach in energy sector, bring the office to a quality standard, extremely specialized, as our numerous istitutional and company clients understand.
Was born in Cagliari in 1974. After scientific studies, he starts his university career at the Engeneering Faculty of Cagliari, where he attends Structural Engineering/Architecture course. He graduates in 2001, presenting a sperimental research about parametric approach to digital project. During this research, he knows the most important international architecture critics and international design offices, with whom he investigates themes about digital projects and its development (Un Studio, Marcos Novak, Lars Spuymbroek, Ammar Eloueini, Doug Garofalo, Asymptote, Greg Lynn, Frank Gehry, Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, Antonino Saggio).
He starts teaching at university level, before he graduates, at “Construction industrialisation” course, with Prof. Ing. Carlo Argiolas, from 1999 to 2002, developing themes about projects of building envelope and its trials; together in 2000 they found “Aided Design” course.
In 2001 he is selected, together with other 8 students from all over the world, to participate to the master class “I-dMedia Summer Institute in digital Media: theories and projects” at University of Illinois, Chicago, School of Architecture, with Ammar Eloueini and Doug Garofalo as teachers. He attends to international workshop “Nuovo Existenz, Nuovo minimum (?)”, working together with Shuhei Endo in design.
From 2002 to 2004 he collaborates, at local context, with Lai and Sequi architectural office and, then, with Campus office. From 2004 he starts working with his future partner, Ivan Zucca, on detail project of the light metro of Cagliari.
In 2006 they founds together “HZ studio - architettura ed ingegneria”. In 2010 he takes a specialisation in Fire Prevention, under the law 818/94 and in 2014 in security on building sites and in 2014 in Security on Temporary and Mobile Building Sites under the law 81/08.
In 2015/2016 attends Master’s Program in “Corporate Development” at Luiss Business School, taking Business Manager certificate.
Was born at Fluminimaggiore (CA) in 1975. Strong interest for figurative arts, architecture and scientific subjects, are fundmental in his future education and profession.
After techno-scientific studies, he starts his university career at Engineering Faculty of Cagliari, where he successfully attends structural Engineering/Architecture course.
He graduates in 2003, presenting a sperimental Thesis in Architecture and Design with Prof. G. Maria Campus, about reasearch of shapes: from architecture to nature, to digital architecture.
From the same year, he starts to collaborate with Arch. Campus architecture office and, at the same time he works on first projects as freelance professional.
Meeting with Christian Bonu, his future professional partner, is essential, and they start working continously together from 2004. Among the first projects, the detail project of Cagliari’s light metro must be reminded, as the starting point forming a future professional partnership.
In 2006, therefore, “HZ studio - studio associato di architettura ed ingegneria” is born, in the first headquarter in via Marmilla.
In 2016, he forms, together with Christian Bonu and Francesco Sardu, the cultural association “Sharing - art and architecture event”, to spread and promote architecture and arts.
SUGGESTION AND IDEA
Suggestion, intended as first approach to addressed theme, can be defined by the flow of necessities, needs related to research object. During the first process stage, it has a fundmental role, in which us, designers, go through a strong initial appealof an external element, which is not necessarily connected to the research object itself. It’s an actual kind of indirect insinuation, in relation with a strong abstracted impression, stimulated and caused by senses. The result of this process brings to model the character and to address future actions in the project choices, through important punctual and local features of suggestion’s object.
From initial suggestions, passing to a rationalization of the abstracted impressions, through different analysis, the first design ideas come out, which represent central element about “doing architecture”, in addiction to autonomous content of all design project. During the entire project’s process, ideas, even if they are studied and integrated, are caused distressed, starting from first inputs, to reaching a model or a prototype. As the process goes on, in a continous elaboraton of relations between suggestions and analysis, from the idea the way proceeds to development of object design, in reaching the aim to convert the idea into shape, from idea to reality. In this way, first visions, in other words first project’s ideas, come out.
Envelope is, probably, the part most technically binding, complex and multidisciplinary of a building, in addition to be subject to regolamentations even more stricted about landscape and energy. It is recognised that building’s success is directly proportional to its capacity in answering needs expressed about functionality, comfort, security and sustainability. In this direction, envelope’s design has an important role, because it has to satisfy different technical and architectural needs, as well as functions in relation to a wide range engineering subjects and aspects. From envelope’s definition, not only building’s architectural characters depend on it, but, also, its performance characteristics. Envelope, as a “skin”, has a fundmental role as dynamic system of environmental filter, able, not only to regulate warm flows, radiations, air and steam, but also to convert radiation in energy (thermal and electric) usable for buildings “metabolism”, and, in general, to carry out a series of key-performance, which represent cornerstones of a global process of eco-efficient interaction with natural environmental factors. At European level design and engineering of building’s envelope is performed by specialised professionals, building envelope consultants or façade engineers. These are experts in all relating building envelope, both new in construction, both to renovate, and, usually, are next to architects and engineers in multidisciplinary design processes. In addition to know all viable systems and materials, building envelope consultants should specifically knowits performance characteristics, such as: structures characteristics; air/water/wind tightness; fire resistance; aspects related to manteinace and duration.
Light’s capture can become one of the most sublime architectural practice. Relations that building envelope activates with its private inner reality, are produced by infinite modulation, managed, at first, by balances between shadow and dim light. When designer focuses a part of landscape, he makes it its own: to nestle into a wall’s fragment and to make it an actively part of architecture’s interior. Similarly, he operates with natural light, taking on from the outside and intentionally definig roads to be used, in crossing of building envelope. Chasing project strategies which are imposed - especially designed by sections drawing - light could largely invade, in other words, quietly weaving: it could be able to procude, already in this first (easy) variable, effects, considerably opposed in perception of plans in the space and to activate specific emotional reactions, or even to hint to rethoric suggestions.
With “non-serial” skins we express the solutions proposed in the architectonic production that are free from principles of typical modularities and serial of making is wanted to be meant and to produce of the “modern society” understanding like assembly line. This type of production of coverings and structural elements change more and more in our way to conceive the space; therefore to adapt the acquaintance to such constructive systems is unavoidable that us ports to an increment of our possibilities of conception and realization, giving to us the possibility to space in this field in a fort experimentation job. Fundamentally this necessity to increase the acquaintances in this forehead, depends mainly on an evolution that is putting into effect itself; in synthesis, from our new approach to the spatiality not characterized from Euclidean geometries but from vectorial geometry.
This infuence the conception of a work giving origin to spaces that don’t correspond to classical approach from the architectonic point of view and constructive: loss of simmetry, fort likeness with anthropomorhic shapes, expressive ambiguity, union between carrying structure and capacity (conception of “skin” of buildings).
Watching to us round, it is in the real spaces that in those virtual ones (web), we become endured account as by now from building years the production has cast towards methodologies of production that until then had seen their single application in processes relegate to industries aeronautics, automotive or of design. The production methodologies today are taken advantage of those variable systems, C.A.M. (Computer Aided Manifacturing), that they allow to realize “non-serial” elements through use of blots of NC or CNC machine.
Strongly which are incumbent in our minds images the museum of Seattle di Frank O’ Gehry, the Embriological Houses di Greg Lynn or the architectures of Bernhard Franken, nearly to demonstrate that thanks to the technique also the clouds can “be materialized” (plan of Fuksas for the auditorium of Rome).
This is what we mean to deal in our practice:
- The conception of non-serial coverings thanks to use of software not directly assigns to planning, like entertainers, modellers, software of matematica etc. (Maya, Softimage, Rhinoceros, Mathematics, PovRay, etc.), derive more than other from the cinematographic industry, estimating the approach to the idea and conceptual phase of the architectonic design of the processes of unknown simulation to evidence of all the problems of feasibility uses you in order to create spatiality.
- The technological solutions and the constructive materials use for the attainment of the staticism of such spaces derive from the aeronautical and automotive design.
- Use of materials, like metallic alloys (titanium, aluminum), plastic materials (teflon, pvc), natural materials (paper, wood) that, thanks to their ductility and adaptability, see application in these architectures.
“Engineering” indicates a working intermediate step between object’s design and its realisation. After projects, in other words after physically realising one or more object’s prototypes, no matter if simple or complex, there is the engineering stage, necessary to do little adjustments to initial design, intending to improve characteristics, but, at the same time, to implement the best technical solutions, which are designed to minimize time needed to assembly in future production stage, as well as to facilitate an eventual maintenance. This stage includes also the choice which aspect to give to the product, in order to maximize satisfaction of an eventual client.
Reaching a good engineering, usually implicates higher costs in terms of time and money for producer, therefore result isn’t always positive. With our project’s engineering we try to interpretate and make possible preliminary design ideas, wether it is generated into the office itself or wether it is generated through collaboration with national and international architecture offices.
Drawing includes and offers the entire tools, techniques, and processes, useful to communication of spatial shapes: drawing is the first primordial element of communication between people and it’s a tool of construction’s art. Today drawings should express work’s unitary value as it was imaged; they are tools to issue dispositions for realisation and like it “they have to speak for theirselves”, they have not need explanations: with drawings we speak to other people and ourselves.
Efficency is the capability of doing and producing minimizing scrap, costs, resources and time.
Usually, it can be expressed as result in percentage compared to a possible ideal result, intended as 100%. This is not always applicable, even in all of those case where to ef ficiency can be assigned a numeric value, for example, pulse functioning, definig efficiency as “relation between results in terms of performance, services, goods or energy, intended as provided performance, and energy emission”. During last years building energy efficiency has been assumed a particular relevance.
the organization of complex construction sites, are connected to the need to create greater continuity between the project phase and the construction site step. Managing yards difficulty is inherent in the transition from project to realization. The attention to the constructive aspect must start from the design phase in order to plan the creation of the yard. Designers must regain the control of the executive stage by entering the merits of technology and security choices. To manage the complexity of the yard, it is necessary to pursue multidisciplinary work in team that offer greater control over the system; it’s important to know the tools available for managing the yard. The designer must expect the proper execution procedures in order to avoid that what is planned is actually and concretely executable, even in appearance logistics. An incorrect or underestimated forecast is easy to entail with difficulties that sometimes become difficult to overcome. The firm would soon be ready to exploit such problems to its advantage by providing reserves, thus raising costs by actually paralyzing the work. Increasing costs often involves draining the resources the customer has and consequently we can talk about unrealizability.
"Sustainability" is the most important thread of our design poetry; the relationship between architecture and the environment plays a fundamental role in the conception of our projects that starts from the place, climatic characteristics, irradiation, materials, dispersion analysis, all to guarantee comfort and well-being inside. Our works are characterized by this approach from the beginning of our design practice, 2016. We can not dissociate the issues of well-being and good living that a building must have for a vision of aesthetics of architecture. An essential approach is an analysis of the climatic data, the exposure of the building and the prevailing winds; the goal is to get a building that does not consume energy and provoke well-being.
